Inter-Organizational Information Systems in the Internet Age
A book edited by Sean B. Eom, Southeast Missouri State University, U.S.A.
Introduction
Since the U.S. department of defence initiated the development of networked computers in 1969, the Internet technologies have advanced rapidly and have revolutionized the way we communicate and conduct business. The second wave of the technological revolution came with the intranet technology in mid 1990s. With the intranet, organizations have strengthened the powers and speed of data gathering/sharing, communication, collaboration, and decision making within a firewall protected organizational boundary. The third wave of this technological evolution, extranets, began in the second half of the 1990s. Many believe that it is the key technology enabler that is triggering a revolution in the structure and operations of many organizations in the new Internet-driven global economy. In addition to maturing Internet technologies, several technology drivers, as well as business drivers, further pushed the emergence of a new type of organizations -- virtual corporations, virtual organizations, extended enterprises, and trans-enterprise systems.
The Overall Objectives of the Book
The purpose of this book is to introduce a new type of information systems, the inter-organizational information system (IOIS), for managing inter-organizational activities of virtual organizations, extended enterprises, trans-enterprise systems, etc. We will discuss the concept of inter-organizational information systems and a wide range of issues addressing all aspects of IOIS including technological and organizational issues, opportunities, and their management in the process of designing, implementing, and evaluating IOIS. Further, we intend to present recent developments in the areas of mobile computing/multi-media platforms, workflow management systems, coordination technologies for coordinating resources, facilities, and projects, monitoring technologies such as executive information systems/executive support systems, filtering and negotiating technologies (intelligent agents), and communication technologies, decision making and knowledge management technologies. The research focus of information systems appears to be shifting from teams, work groups, and intranet-based organizational information systems to extranet-based inter-organizational information systems. IOIS are an indispensable communication, monitoring, filtering, coordinating, and decision tool for enhancing inter-organizational competitiveness to achieve system-wide global objectives.
The Target Audience
Professionals, Researchers and Students in the field of management information systems, information science, computer science areas. The scholarly value of this proposed book and its contribution will be to explore the new frontiers in the information systems area. Few current books on the market address this topic.
