I am an Assistant Professor of Management in the Department of Management and Marketing in the Donald L. Harrison College of Business at Southeast Missouri State University.
I completed my Ph.D. in Management from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I received my certification as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) in 2000.I also received a Master of Business Administration in Health Care Human Resources and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resources from East Tennessee State University.
I have nearly 10 years progressive human resource management experience in hospital organizations, culminating as HR Manager for a 50-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital. Teaching undergraduates and MBA students, I specialize in human resources and research methodology courses. I have also taught a variety of management classes at the University of Tennessee and East Tennessee State University including Evaluating Training Design, Business Communications, Operations Management and Management Information Systems.
I received the 2011 Students' Choice Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2010 Graduate Students' Outstanding Teaching Award from Southeast Missouri State University and two Cutting Edge Awards (for a top-ten conference paper) from the Academy for Human Resource Development in 2009 and 2010. My co-authored article with Ann and Jerry Gilley, "Organizational Change and Characteristics of Leadership Effectiveness" was the most read article in the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies in 2009. Finally, I received the Chancellor's Citation for Excellence in Professional Promise from The University of Tennessee in 2008.
My research interests are in the fields of work/life harmony (including occupational stress), human capital (including metrics), healthcare human resources, and HR practitioner development.
I have been published in the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, Marriage and Family Review, Human Resource Development Quarterly, Human Resource Development Review, Performance Improvement Quarterly, and The Praeger Handbook of Human Resource Management. I also have multiple refereed conference proceedings, including Southern Management Association, Midwest Academy of Management, Management Marketing Association, MBAA International and the Academy for Human Resource Development. I have also presented research at the National Council of Family Relations Conference and the Families and Work Research Conference sponsored by Brigham Young University.
I currently serve as Faculty Advisor to the HR Redhawks, Southeast's SHRM Student Affiliate, as well as the moderator for Redhawk Rumble, a college-sponsored academic competition. Additionally, I serve on multiple university, college and department-level committees.
I have served as a reviewer, session chair and discussant at the national meetings of the Academy of Management, Academy of Human Resource Development and Southern Management Association. Additionally, I served as Conference Program Coordinator for the Academy of Human Resource Development’s 2007 and 2008 conferences.
I am a member of the Academy of Management, Southern Management Association, Society for Human Resource Management, Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma.
